The Cosmos Hub is a blockchain, and functions as the economic center of the Cosmos network. It enables several vital services, such as a marketplace for digital assets, chain connections, the securing of chains, and the custodianship of digital assets.
ATOM Token
The Cosmos Hub is powered by its native token ATOM. ATOM is used to pay transaction fees, to secure the Cosmos Hub’s interchain services through staking, and for payment of staking rewards.
Proof-of-Stake (PoS)
The Cosmos Hub is a proof-of-stake blockchain, enabling holders of the ATOM token to secure the chain, and earn transaction fees by locking their ATOM. Besides earning staking rewards, ATOM stakers can also vote on proposals to help decide the future of the network.
Ignite
Ignite is the underlying consensus mechanism that allows the Cosmos Hub to function, and facilitates the operation of independent blockchains in the Cosmos ecosystem. Ignite allows for the function of important components like the Cosmos SDK, and the IBC Protocol.
Cosmos SDK
The Cosmos SDK (software development kit) is a blockchain framework the powers the Cosmos Hub and expanding ecosystem of chains. The Cosmos SDK allows developers to innovate and build application-specific blockchains with fast transaction speeds.
IBC Protocol (Interoperability)
The IBC (Inter-Blockchain Communication) protocol enables interoperability by connecting blockchains in the Cosmos ecosystem. Users can exchange data & digital assets across decentralized blockchains, allowing for a wide range of cross-chain applications.
Interchain Stack
The interchain stack in an architecture for scalable, secure, and interconnected blockchain-based apps & services. Utilizing the IBC protocol, the interchain stack provides open source protocols, libraries, and tools for interconnected chains.
Cosmos Developers
Developers on Cosmos are able to build innovative blockchain apps & services on a secure and stable foundation. This includes DeFi applications, autonomous organizations, game economies through NFTs, and even autonomous social networks.
Atom 2.0
As the Cosmos Hub transitions to an infrastructure service platform, ATOM will be used as preferred collateral within the Network. The new design will feature Interchain Security (ICS), Liquid Staking, Interchain Schedule to generate MEV rewards, and Interchain Allocator to distribute them to support new chains.
